Diwali, the Festival of Lights!

Written by Pacifica Senior Living | Nov 4, 2021 12:41:21 AM

November is here, and that means it’s time to celebrate one of India’s greatest annual holidays -- Diwali, the Festival of Lights!

Perhaps the most well-known Indian holiday in the United States, Diwali is not to be confused with Holi, the Festival of Colors. What is Diwali? Also known as Divali or Deepawali, Diwali is a 5-day national celebration wherein participants decorate their homes and businesses in lights -- similar to the way many of us hang lights as a Christmas tradition!

At Pacifica Senior Living, we strive to celebrate our staff and residents who come from around the world to work and live in our communities. Diwali is an excellent opportunity for our residents to learn more about one of the world’s most widely-celebrated holidays, while creating a chance for those who recognize the tradition to celebrate alongside friends and family.

Diwali’s 5-day festivities begin on November 4th, with the first day known as Dhanteras. Diwali celebrations often include music and dancing, creating a beautiful opportunity for families and friends to celebrate the joyous occasion together while appreciating the shining light displays. Each day of Diwali serves a unique traditional purpose, and during these holiday gatherings, family members may give gifts and share a banquet, making Diwali a holiday many look forward to!

With roots in Hindu culture, Diwali is often celebrated as a secular holiday today -- also similar to Christmas in the United States. Throughout the country, people of Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, and Sikh cultures hold Diwali celebrations to recognize the traditional Festival of Lights.

At Pacifica Senior Living, we enjoy celebrating different cultures, special  holidays and events.
