Moving can seem like an overwhelming task under normal circumstances, but add in the additional details that are involved when it is a relocation to senior living and it can seem even more daunting. How much furniture to bring, how many personal items are appropriate, what you want to spend, or what care level you need are just some of the questions you may be asking yourself as you make the move.

To help with this transition, we’ve put together a checklist for you of some of the key questions you should ask when preparing for a move to Senior Living. We hope it will help point you in the right direction and answer some of the toughest questions you may have about making the change to a senior living community.

  1. What am I willing to spend?

Determining the cost of senior living and what you’re willing to spend is an important first question to ask yourself or discuss with your loved ones and family members because it will determine what types of communities you will visit. Whether you are looking for a luxury retirement community, somewhere with senior care or health care options, or are simply downsizing to a more manageable apartment, there is a community to fit every budget and need.

Deciding your limits will help you narrow down your choices and make your search more comfortable. it is important to keep in mind that finances and budgets should be looked at not just monthly, but annually, as senior living communities generally cover a lot more services, amenities and care needs that you may not pay monthly when living in your own home.

  2. What type of Senior Living do you need?

It is important to consider honestly the senior living options available, and what will meet you needs.

If you want a lifestyle of carefree ease surrounded by older adults and peers, a retirement community or active adult 55+ community is a great option. These senior housing options and apartments remove the hassle of home maintenance while allowing you full freedom and independence.

Similarly, an independent living community offers some services like home upkeep, laundry service, housekeeping or dining options, but ensures your full independence and autonomy in day to day activities.

If you need some assistance with the activities of daily living, have considered home care, would like the support of a caregiver, or want the option to add more services and support as they become necessary, an assisted living community is probably the right choice.
Assisted Living offers care services and caregivers that grow and adapt with your changing needs to ensure your best possible quality of life.

If you are helping a loved one who has memory impairment or dementia find a new community, you will likely need to look into memory care. Memory Care communities specifically cater to the needs and wellness of those with memory loss conditions, offering care, support, programs and therapies while giving you peace of mind that your loved one is a in a comfortable and secure place they can truly thrive.

  3. Does Medicare pay for Senior living?

Many people do not understand the ins and outs of Medicare. Specifically designed for seniors, Medicare is typically only used for short term stays in Skilled Nursing (think rehabilitative stays) and therefore is not accepted in other senior living communities. Many communities do accept long-term care insurance policies that often pay a daily rate or have a cap after a certain time period, but other than that they are mainly private pay.

  4. Are you a Veteran or a surviving spouse of a Veteran?

In 1967, the Aid and Attendance benefit was born which allows Veterans and their surviving spouses to access funds paid on a monthly basis to offset the costs of senior living care. For surviving spouses, it can be up to $1200, and for the Veteran it can be upwards of over $2000 per month. There are specific companies who assist with filling out these applications and securing the benefit and the local VA office can also help with the process.

  5. What’s the commitment?

From continuing care communities that require a large deposit and monthly rent thereafter, to month to month rentals, there are a variety of options. Choose to commit to the pricing and payment option that most closely meets your preferences. Finding a plan and senior community that best suits your situation will help you feel at ease when making the move.

  6. Can I personalize my apartment?

Yes! Just as you made your home unique to your tastes and décor of choice, communities typically want you to do the same when you move in to a new apartment or living space. The more it feels like your home, the happier you will be there.

Each senior living community has a wide range of amenities, care options, and activities for their residents. Amenities can range from on-site beauty salons and entertainment rooms, to pools, gyms, and restaurant style dining rooms. Most communities also offer a wide range of care options which can be adapted to suit your needs.

Top notch communities will also offer a variety of events and activities for residents to enjoy, allowing them to stay active, supporting physical and mental health, and make meaningful connections with new friends and neighbors.
