Employee Spotlight: Bringing the Fun with George Stickles

Oct 16, 2023 11:38:30 AM / by Carly Dodd, Pacifica Senior Living

The events, activities and classes in our communities are what truly make our communities stand out from the rest. We offer a fun-filled calendar of activities ranging from crafts, to games, outings and events. We sat down with one of our amazing Activities Directors, George Stickles, to talk more about his journey into Senior Living, and why he loves his role at Pacifica Senior Living Mission Villa.

Activities are not only a fun part of daily life in our communities, but provide enrichment, learning opportunities, and physical and cognitive therapies, especially in Memory Care communities like Pacifica Senior Living Mission Villa. Understanding the specific needs of residents, and creating an accepting, fun-filled environment is what George does so well. He is able to inspire, teach, and encourage residents while also having a blast enjoying each day.

Tell us about your career path and time at Pacifica Senior Living Mission Villa?

Prior to joining Pacifica, I finished my music degree program at Cal State Northridge.  I wasn’t sure if going to graduate school was for me, so I sort of stumbled into the senior living industry by accident at the Village at Hayes Valley where I was the concierge and then later worked in activities.  A few years later, I joined the Mission Villa team.

What is your favorite memory at Pacifica Senior Living Mission Villa?

My favorite memory is hearing my residents sing along to “Fly Me to The Moon” as I played the melody on the trombone.  I thought, “this is incredible.”

Who are some of your biggest inspirations?

My biggest inspiration within Pacifica Senior Living is Jackie Bobbitt (Vice President of Operations).  During my first week with Pacifica (April 2017), I had the opportunity to meet Jackie, who instilled the utmost importance of commitment to service to our residents and community.  She empowered me to excel in a growing industry.  Her motto is “Keep Moving Forward,” which I live by every day.

What inspires you?

When I discover hidden talents among the staff, I am inspired by the things they can do.  If a staff member knows how to karaoke very well, or can share a food demo that’s important to them, I encourage them to showcase it for our residents.

How have you grown professionally while with Pacifica?

Being with Pacifica has allowed me to flourish as an Activities Director.  I take pride in being a mentor to fellow ADs around the Bay Area, and offering that direct support for their growing programs.

Why senior living? Why Pacifica?

I feel very supported being with Pacifica—everyone in my community and beyond offers their help whenever needed.  I think that is unique to Pacifica because the mission of dedication and service  to our residents is across the board.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I play trombone in a local orchestra in downtown San Francisco.  About four times a year, we put on classical concerts at the world renowned Herbst Theatre, open to the public for free.

What piece of advice would you give to your younger self?

I would tell my younger self “be open to opportunities, and give it a try.”

What is your favorite part about working in the senior living world?

My favorite part of the senior living world is working with so many diverse people:  from the staff to the residents.

George makes a big impact in his community each and every day. His bright spirit and passion for his work shine through, and he can constantly be seen smiling, teaching, and having fun with residents and fellow staff members. Each and every day, we can see the warmth and excitement he brings to his community and beyond.

Thank you for all you do, and for making Pacifica Senior Living Mission Villa such a wonderful place to live and work.
