Understanding the Difference Between Independent and Assisted Living

Apr 12, 2022 9:00:00 AM / by Pacifica Senior Living

Whether you’re looking for long-term senior care for yourself or for a loved one, you may have a lot of questions as you evaluate your options. The right choice for each person depends on his or her unique daily needs and ideal retirement atmosphere. There are distinct differences between programs like Assisted Living and Independent Living, and we are here to help you understand the difference and find what works best for you or your loved one.

While both types of communities vary greatly, Independent Living and Assisted Living as a whole offer very different styles of living and levels of care. Many Pacifica Senior Living communities offer both Independent Living and Assisted Living options, which helps residents transition as needed without leaving their preferred community.

Independent Living

Independent Living offers a community-based approach to retirement as an alternative to homeownership.

As an Independent Living resident, you (or your loved one) will enjoy total freedom to structure each day however they please. Each day brings new opportunities for Independent Living residents to have fun and make friends, all within the bounds of their community.

Independent Living strives to provide residents with a maintenance-free approach to daily living. Dedicated staff take care of housekeeping, lawn work, and preparing meals, creating more time for residents to relax or enjoy their favorite activities.

Assistance is always available to Independent Living residents, although staff are typically less involved with the activities of their daily life than they are with Assisted Living residents.

At Pacifica Senior Living we have a wide variety of Assisted Living communities across the country!

Assisted Living

Assisted Living combines the convenience and maintenance-free approach of Independent Living with customized personal care services.

While a person in Independent Living may not need ongoing assistance with activities of daily living like bathing, grooming, or dressing, these services are readily available to Assisted Living residents if and when they need them. Assisted Living residents will experience daily check-ins, with staff offering assistance according to each person’s unique individual needs.

Assisted Living residents are invited to dine with their fellow community members, enjoy housekeeping, and take advantage of convenient services like transportation. As a person’s care needs change, so will his or her care routine, allowing him or her to live each day with an ideal balance of support and independence.

Our Pacifica Senior Living's caregivers are dedicated and compassionate, offering excellent care to all our Senior Living Residents. You can learn more about Assisted Living here, or visit one of our many AL communities.

We encourage families to reach out to our team with any questions about Assisted Living and Independent Living.  We are committed to helping incoming residents find the care routine that best suits their needs and expectations, creating the retirement experience they’ve always imagined.
