Sarah S. from Pacifica Senior Living Newport Mesa recently celebrated her 105th birthday, surrounded by friends, family and loved ones. Our team loved being able to share in this special moment with her, and share in her joy at seeing her family come together around her.
Sarah was born south of Shafter, California in the small unincorporated town of Rio Bravo. She was the fifth of eight children. Sarah loved school and learning, and she particularly excelled in English and writing. After graduating from Delano High School, she continued her education in Comptometer.
Growing up in the Swing Era, Sarah loved to dance. She would not only ballroom dance but also loved to jive, jitterbug and swing at popular venues like the Balboa Ballroom at the Crystal Palace in Long Beach, Sweet's ballroom, Coconut Grove, and the Copacabana.
While living in Costa Mesa, California, Sarah met the love of her life, David, a Marine Corps Master Sergeant. They married in September 1951, and had two children: David Jr. and Paula. The Marine Corps life involved moving to new states frequently, and David and Sarah found themselves relocating to Georgia, Tennessee, and Hawaii. Sarah often said she particularly enjoyed living in Memphis, Tennessee.
In 1958, Sarah and David returned to live permanently in Southern California. In the late 60s and early 70s Sarah returned to college to focus on business studies, and soon after graduating worked for the California Department of Health and Licensing where she stayed until her retirement. Unfortunately, in 1970 Sarah's husband David passed away suddenly.
After retirement, Sarah enjoyed meeting with her sister to shop in the garment district of Los Angeles and volunteering at the Costa Mesa Senior Center where she was passionate about supporting her friends in their many endeavors. She loved to cook for her grandchildren and spend time with family.
Upon turning 101, Sarah moved to Pacifica Senior Living Newport Mesa, where she currently resides.
Sarah turned 105 on May 28th, and was delighted to enjoy a party with her friends and family. We asked her and her children to share a bit about this special day, including her secret to a happy, healthy life.
